Welcome to the Design & Technology department at Heathcote School!
Welcome to the Design and Technology Department at Heathcote School and Science College. Each of the five DT disciplines are taught within the department; Resistant Materials, Textiles, Systems and Control, Food and Graphics and students rotate between each of these subject areas at Key Stage 3 before having the opportunity to choose a DT subject to complete as a GCSE.
At Key Stage 3 students will follow the seven stages of the design process; analysing, researching, designing, planning, making, testing and evaluating, with a final product outcome being produced along with a design folder explaining their design journey. Students will be given a National Curriculum level for designing and making once they have completed a project in one of the DT disciplines which is recorded in their Student Assessment Record providing each student with targets to raise their NC Level.
Students studying a GCSE within the department will complete a skills building course along with three minor projects in year 10. These projects will not count towards the students’ final GCSE grade but will provide them with the skills they require to gain a good grade during their final year. In year 11 students will complete a major project requiring them to produce a twenty page A3 project folder, single product outcome and complete an exam that is approximately ninety minutes long. The Catering option is structured differently with students completing two modules, one in year 10 and one in year 11, where they will be required to complete a full day’s practical assessment along with a project folder and exam.
