Welcome to the English department
All students at Heathcote have four hours of English lessons each week. Lessons consist of reading, writing, as well as speaking and listening activities. The English department prides itself on delivering ICT based, interactive and enjoyable lessons.
At key stage 3, students are taught following the national curriculum guidelines and are assessed using the national curriculum levels. Each year, skills are taught and built upon, preparing students for their GCSEs.
At key stage 4, students follow the AQA GCSE syllabus for English Language and English Literature. Year 10 focuses on the completion of five pieces of written coursework and three pieces of oral coursework. In year 11, English lessons focus on preparing students for the final exams.
In years 10 and 11, the English department also provides programmes for students who find English difficult. At the moment, we have Study Plus classes in both year groups, where the students have extra English lessons each week.
The English department provides many opportunities for extended learning and we take part in various competitions. We also participate in several special events such as the Jack Petchey Speak Out Challenge, as well as trips to the Globe theatre.
