Junior Leadership Team

Student voice is extremely important at Heathcote School. One of the ways that student's views are sought and listened to is through the Junior Leadership Team (JLT). This is closely linked with the House system and consists of the Heads of Houses, the prefects and an elected member of the house for each year group.

Every half term students meet to discuss a set of questions. Each year group meets with their learning manager to begin the discussion. Those students continue to discuss the issues with their peers for a couple of weeks and then meet in houses to feedback to the House Captain and a member of the Senior Leadership Team. The House Captain takes the views from their house to a meeting with the Headteacher (more information here). Finally the report from that meeting is shared with all students at house meetings.

Questions for discussion are chosen from those put forward by students and those put forward by staff. The questions currently being discussed are:

Junior Leadership questions for January and February 2011

Questions from the staff

This question is about the classrooms. The rooms were intended to be comfortable, user friendly areas for learning. Tell us what bits you like and what changes you would like to see made. You should think about:

  • Comfort
    Attractiveness
Classroom displays – can you find information. Would you like to see more/less students work displayed? If so what type?
Furniture – is it well used, the right size etc
    Do the rooms encourage learning?

At Heathcote we take equal opportunities seriously and want everyone treated fairly. Are we getting it right? How can we make it even better? You should think about:

  • Ethnic diversity
    Physical disabilities
    Gender issues
    Sexual tolerance

Questions from the students

In previous meetings students have mentioned they would like to see more activities at lunchtimes. Please expand on this suggestion and give examples of what activities / clubs/ facilities you would like and how we can make them successful. For example, how would you suggest a film club should be managed to be effective.

Students have also mentioned they would like to have a shop at lunch time. What would you like the shop to sell? Where would you like the shop to be based? Who should run it? When would you like it to be open?

Any other Business

Are there any more issues you would like to raise, or that other students have asked you to raise on their behalf?
