London 2012 Young Leaders Project

Friday 25th November 2011
On Friday 11th November the London 2012 young leader’s project was introduced and delivered in Heathcote School. The aim was to prove that one person’s waste is another one’s treasure. The project will demonstrate that there is value and life in recycled sports equipment. The year 12 students were trained by Gary Richardson from ‘Sports Into schools’ in retail, sales and project delivery. After this they will be expected to collect recycled sports equipment at the school with the aim of selling the clothing and equipment at the school and Walthamstow Town Centre market. The proceeds will then be re-distributed to a selected community sports club in Waltham Forest. A team of volunteers (from Heathcote) will be involved in the planning and delivery of the project. The project supports the Olympic values in a number of ways;

 1. Excellence – to raise as much money as possible to provide equipment to a local club

2. Friendship – team building and meeting new people

3. Determination – to sell all the collected goods

4. Inspiration – an athlete supporter will address the volunteers and possibly the school

5. Equality – prove that despite financial differences, people can support each other by donations

After the delivery of the project Donna Kellog, former GB Olympic badminton player, presented all the sixth formers involved with a certificate and challenged them to a game. She wasn’t beaten!
