Multilingual Poetry Evening 2010

Wednesday 28th April 2010

Heathcote students were praised and congratulated on their excellent contributions to the Multilingual Poetry Evening 2010 hosted this year by Frederick Bremer School.

Students from around the borough were invited to prepare and perform an item of poetry, song or dance using Multilingual Poetry Eveningtheir home language and culture. The evening was a colourful celebration showing richness of culture and the beauty of languages from around the world whilst most importantly, giving students the opportunity to use their talents to entertain and show their proficiency in languages.

Year 11 students Ayshe Caluda and Hannah Solinunte did presentations on Children’s Day in Turkey and St Martin’s Day in Germany and read and translated Poems linked to these in Turkish, German and English. Cher Leo-Imarhiagbe from year 7 presented a poem on Africa in French and Kadriye Dayan was very popular with the audience, when she read a Turkish poem thanking teachers for the wonderful work they do.

All the girls were confident and felt proud and excited about their achievements. They enjoyed performing their finale together, Benjamin Zephaniah’s ‘Everybody’s Doing It’ which they chose because it demonstrates another ‘universal language’ enjoyed all around the world, the language of dance.

The students all enjoyed taking part in the show and said they would love to do it again! More Heathcote students will have the opportunity to take part in next years show because we are pleased say that Heathcote School will be hosting the event.
