The Physical Education Department at Heathcote School aims to offer students experiences which enable them to enjoy different forms of physical activity through planning, performing, evaluating and working with others.
All pupils receive two one hour sessions of Physical Education every week throughout Key Stage 3 (Year 7-9). All groups are taught in mixed ability groups and wherever possible single sex groups. However at times there are mixed sex groups where it has been impossible to separate the students. Boys and Girls are all taught the same curriculum.
The Physical Education Department at Heathcote School has run a successful G.C.S.E Physical Education course for a number of years. The following information for syllabus (Ed Excel syllabus – 1827) provides a brief outline to the structure of the course.
Pupils in Key Stage 4 take part in a single, one hour period of core Physical Education during Years 10 and 11. Those students who opt to take the subject at G.C.S.E. level have a further two and a half hours of both practical sport and theoretical lessons.
As with Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 groups are taught in mixed ability groups and the groups may be mixed sex groups depending on the option they have chosen. Groups are taught on an option basis and follow full units of work over the two years.
The Sports Leaders U.K. Level One Award is offered in both Years 10 and 11. Students visit local feeder primary schools, where they use the medium of sport to help young people learn essential skills within their PE lessons.
Students should understand the importance of an active lifestyle in the maintenance of good health and be equipped to pursue sport in their leisure time.
